SGPC Demands Ban on Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency Over Misrepresentation of Sikh Leader Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale
SGPC Ttakes a strong stand against Bollywood film Emergency
The upcoming release of Kangana Ranaut’s film Emergency has sparked major controversy, particularly among the Sikh community. From the moment the film was announced, it has faced opposition, and now the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has stepped in with a strong demand to ban the film. Led by its president Harjinder Singh Dhami, the SGPC has passed a resolution calling for the film to be stopped, citing concerns over misrepresentation and potential harm to communal harmony.
The main issue revolves around the portrayal of Sant Jarnail Singh Khalsa Bhindranwale, a revered figure in Sikh history. The SGPC claims that Emergency depicts Bhindranwale as a terrorist, which they see as a major insult to the Sikh community. Harjinder Singh Dhami, in a public statement, expressed his outrage, saying, “This is a direct attack on Sikhs and their role during the Emergency period. The film is harmful and seems designed to spread hatred”. SGPC states, We demand that the Censor Board halt its release immediately.”
Dhami from SGPC further added that the film not only distorts history but also risks creating religious tension in Punjab. He urged the Punjab government to take swift action and ban the movie before its release, warning of unrest if it is allowed to hit theaters. He even appealed to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha to revoke Kangana Ranaut’s parliamentary membership, accusing her of using communal rhetoric for personal gain.
This controversy has stirred debates across the country, with people discussing the balance between freedom of speech and respecting religious sentiments. Dhami emphasized that the Sikh community would not tolerate such defamation and would do everything in SGPC power to prevent the film from being shown in Punjab.
With the release date of Emergency approaching, all eyes are now on the Punjab government and the Censor Board to see whether they will honor the SGPC’s request or allow the movie to be screened. Regardless of the outcome, the film has gained a significant amount of attention due to this ongoing protest, ensuring that it will remain a hot topic in the coming days.
