Kerala High Court Proposes Delaying Film Reviews to Combat “Review Bombing”
To address concerns about negative reviews affecting film collections, the Kerala High Court suggests a simple solution: hold off on posting reviews for the first 48 hours after a movie comes out. This move aims to prevent “review bombing,” where biased or unfair reviews flood social media platforms and sway people’s opinions unfairly.
The court-appointed advisor, Shyam Padman, suggests strict rules to stop this practice. He notes that some people write negative reviews just to get paid or to push their own agenda. To deal with this, he proposes creating a special website where people can report unfair reviews.
Padman also recommends that reviewers should be respectful and constructive in their criticism. Instead of bashing a movie, they should offer helpful feedback that helps filmmakers improve.
The court agrees that delaying reviews could help stop unfair criticism. They’ve seen that many negative comments aren’t genuine and are just meant to harm a film’s reputation.
To tackle this issue, the Kochi City Police has already started taking complaints seriously. They’re investigating cases where filmmakers say their movies were unfairly targeted online.
Overall, the Kerala High Court’s suggestions aim to make film criticism fairer and more honest, protecting both filmmakers and audiences from unfair practices.
