Jacqueline Fernandez Claims She Had No Knowledge of Sukesh Chandrasekhar’s Fraud: High Court Drama Unfolds
Bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandez, entangled in a high-stakes Rs 200 crore money laundering case, appeared before the Delhi High Court on November 13, defending herself against allegations of knowingly accepting extravagant gifts funded by illicit means. Through her counsel, senior advocates Siddharth Agrawal, Prashant Patil, and Shakti Pandey, Jacqueline Fernandez argued that she was unaware of the questionable origins of the gifts received from alleged conman Sukesh Chandrasekhar, who is accused of orchestrating a massive fraud. The actress claims she believed the gifts were personal and that Chandrasekhar was a legitimate businessman, leaving her in shock at the criminal allegations now surfacing.
Representing Jacqueline Fernandez, her legal team stated, “She was not involved in money laundering nor was she aware of the source of the gifts.” The actress has now been drawn into the spotlight of a publicized investigation led by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which accuses Chandrasekhar of extorting vast sums from Aditi Singh, wife of a prominent businessman, and using those funds to shower Jacqueline Fernandez with expensive gifts. These items, allegedly bought with “proceeds of crime,” have placed Fernandez in a difficult position as she attempts to distance herself from Chandrasekhar’s network.
Justice Anish Dayal, presiding over the hearing, questioned whether there is an obligation upon individuals to investigate the source of gifts they receive. This question has ignited discussions about personal accountability, particularly for public figures. Fernandez’s defense team contends that her acceptance of the gifts was in good faith, a mere “oversight” rather than a deliberate choice, and emphasized that she had no intent to engage in money laundering.
Adding further complexity to the case, Jacquiline Fernandez’s legal team pointed to the involvement of co-accused Pinky Irani, who reportedly introduced Chandrasekhar to Fernandez and painted him as a “political fixer” with substantial government connections. According to Fernandez’s counsel, Irani presented Chandrasekhar as a reputable figure, convincing Jacqueline Fernandez that his wealth and gifts were legitimate, thus clearing any doubts she might have had. When Fernandez encountered news reports in 2019 linking Chandrasekhar to criminal activity, her counsel claims she immediately cut off communication, demonstrating her unwillingness to associate with suspected criminals.
Despite Jacqueline Fernandez’s explanations, the ED alleges that she chose to ignore credible news reports about Chandrasekhar’s illicit activities, suggesting she should have verified his background more carefully. However, her defense team counters this, stating that merely encountering such news does not equate to knowingly participating in a crime.
As the court prepares for further arguments scheduled on November 26, Jacqueline Fernandez’s case raises questions about the responsibility celebrities bear in scrutinizing the sources of their wealth and gifts. Jacqueline Fernandez’s legal team argues that her acceptance of the gifts without knowledge of their criminal origins exempts her from liability, underscoring that her actions were not criminally motivated. This high-profile case, attracting significant public attention, now hinges on whether the court finds that Jacqueline Fernandez had a duty to question Chandrasekhar’s wealth or if she can be excused as a victim of deceit.
