Ammy Virk Shares Insights on Punjabi Cinema’s Growth and Future

Ammy Virk, one of the brightest stars in Punjabi cinema, is all set for his latest release “Kudi Haryane Val Di” alongside the talented Sonam Bajwa. Known for his versatility as an actor-singer, Ammy Virk has also made significant inroads into Bollywood, having been part of the blockbuster “83” directed by Kabir Khan, starring Ranveer Singh. His next big Hindi film is “Bad Newz,” where he’ll share the screen with Vicky Kaushal and Triptii Dimri, under the banner of Karan Johar.

In an exclusive conversation with ETimes, Ammy Virk opened up about the challenges and potential of Punjabi cinema. When asked about why Punjabi cinema hasn’t grown as rapidly as South Indian cinema, Ammy Virk offered some thought-provoking insights.

“We’re just getting started,” Ammy Virk remarked, reflecting on the journey of Punjabi cinema. “First, Diljit Dosanjh paved the way, and then Gippy Grewal followed. More stars are emerging now.” He emphasized that while Punjabi cinema is still in its nascent stages, there is significant promise for growth.

Ammy Virk pointed out a key difference: the population. “Our population is quite limited. In South Indian states, the population is similar, but they have an unmatched love for their cinema, almost like a religion. They worship their actors,” he explained. This intense passion and dedication from the audience play a crucial role in the success of South Indian films.

So, what’s the next step for Punjabi cinema? According to Ammy Virk, it’s about expanding beyond traditional family films. “We need to start making action films or fiction films. We should also explore our rich history and culture, creating films about legends like Maharaja Ranjit Singh and Hari Singh Nalwa. But such films require big budgets,” he said.

Ammy Virk believes that with the right investment and trust, Punjabi cinema can attract top-tier directors and action choreographers. “It’s all about trust. Today, Diljit Paaji is selling out arenas and stadiums, and people have faith in him. Soon, they will step out to watch our films too,” he added optimistically.

Interestingly, Ammy Virk noted that South Indian films do exceptionally well in Punjab, suggesting a mutual appreciation for different regional cinemas. “One day, our Punjabi films will also do well in the South. It’s just a matter of time and trust,” he concluded.
