Nimrat Khaira once rejected a Bollywood role to support farmers in Punjab

Singer and actress Nimrat Khaira is a self-made personality from the world of entertainment. She started singing as a school student in grade 3. Also, she won Voice of Punjab season 3 to start a professional career in singing. Apart from singing she made a Pollywood debut as an actress with Lahoriye. She then, the actress cum singer is not looking back. She is continuously delivering songs with the best singers and regularly portrays strong characters in Punjabi movies. Additionally, she also won an award for her performance in the Lahoriye Punjabi film.

Not just Punjab she was noticed in Mumbai as well. And makers of Gadar 2 approached her to offer her the role of Jeeta’s wife. She was supposed to portray the character of a Muslim girl who got married to Jeeta and now she and her husband are stuck in Pakistan. It was a strong role as the story revolves around the rescue mission for the couple.

but the actress strictly refused this offer stating that she will not accept any Bollywood offer as she is against the center Govt and among the protesting farmers of north India. being a Known figure of the state she felt that accepting this offer may separate her from the protests. and her this decision can actually weaken the farmers’ community in front of the govt of India. Hence she strictly refused.

After her rejection, the role was offered to Simi Chahal another rising star from the Pollywood Industry. But she as well refused it on the same grounds.  Just like her fellow artist, she preferred to stay with the community instead of grabbing the opportunity. Finally, the investors shortlisted Simrat Kaur for the role of Ria Khan Singh in Gadar2 the Katha continues. Although, it did not affect the govt as they were not aware that the artists as well stood strong in rejecting such offers. But this information makes the Punjabis proud and more respectful towards the artists of the state.

It is a fact that as a star, Nimrat Khaira could have accepted this opportunity to make an entry into the Bollywood industry. It was an important step for her strong career. Moreover, she is a very good singer and Punjabi music is sought after worldwide. Hence this was a big offer for the artist with a better scope for her career graph in Mumbai. She would be more reachable to bigger masses and expand her fanbase. But she chose to stand next to the farmers in their protests instead of fame and publicity.

For the unversed, many Pollywood singers are as well devoted to their singles in the wake of the protests when govt was not ready to listen to the community of Punjab. Their songs gave a vocal presence to the community. and they turned out to be an emotional support for the youth as well. The protests continued for almost a year starting from September 2020 when the laws bill was passed and till November 2021 when the repeal bill was passed.

On just Indians but NRI Indians, international Bodies, many NGO’s and Presidents of other countries commented on the matter. Canadian rapper Nav came out to open to support the protests. Barbadian singer Rihanna shared a post referring to the protests and mentioned why we do not talk about this. Every Body else than the Modi govt was concerned. Ever Supreme Court of India had to intervene to warn govt that peaceful protest may get converted to harmful and will generate a war-like situation in the country. Finally, after many losses and sacrifices the Govt had to step back and let the farmers win.

It was a unity that won for the state. Everybody’s contribution matters here. And Nimrat Khaira proved her existence by refusing a strong opportunity to take entry in the Bollywood Industry. Definitely, she will get many chances in the future to expand her career but that was once in a lifetime opportunity to stand with the state in the need of the hour.

On the work front, the actress was last seen in Jodi opposite Pollywood singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh. The story of the film is based on two singers who started as co-workers and kept presenting vocal music on stages throughout Punjab. And they ended up falling for each other. Nimrat’s character happened to get better opportunities in life but she chose the love of her life over those golden chances. hence it is a blend of music love and comedy.

The narrative was released on 5 May 2023 worldwide and grossed around 45 crores becoming a blockbuster of the year. Interestingly it grossed 32 crores from overseas almost 3 times its Indian collection. Which depicts that NRIs are still fond of Punjabi entertainers.

We appreciate the courage of Nimrat Khaira to stand with the farmers and wish her good luck in life.
