While promoting Talaash, Aamir Khan almost redefined Pay disparity based on gender in Bollywood. Even explained the pay decisions of the rest of the staff working behind the scan.
Aamir Khan is considered as one of the perfectionists of Bollywood whatever he does he makes sure that it is not at all compromised and 100% of what it has to be for the audience. Every time he comes up with a project Netizens and his followers get excited because she brings something new to the table.
He is considered one of the most expensive actors as well Once when he was promoting his upcoming film Talaash he was asked by an anchor to say something on the ongoing debate of pay disparity based on gender in Bollywood. He said, “Pay to an artist is not based on gender. Rather it is based on the amount of seats an actor is able to get filled. Every investor pays the crew according to their ability only.”
When Aamir Khan defended his words with an example
Elaborating further he gave an example and stated that there are other people working on the sets like cameramen, make artists or junior artists. But including stars and everybody working on the film sets a person will only get 10 rupees if he is capable of generating 10 rupees or more for the producers. Hence, referring to his co-star Rani Mukherjee he said, “If she has the capability to pull more audience and revenue for the project definitely she will be paid higher compared to me as well.”
The anchor of the show interrupted him asking if he was comparing his female co-star Rani to a cameraman. But he immediately rectified this and said that he included himself Rani Mukherjee cameraman and everybody working on the project in the same circumstances. Also, he said, according to him everybody gets paid according to the worth that person creates for the project.
We agree with the Talaash actor Aamir Khan
Somehow he is right because the industry is male-dominated. Even audiences are more inclined toward the male lead actor. Further, even scripts as well are made targeting male actors in India. No doubt changes are coming. Now we see some strong female-centric scripts as well and they happen to win the audience with their powerful performances.
Moreover, they have started to get paid more compared to the male stars in those films for example Veere di Wedding, Queen, and Mary Kom were a few Bollywood projects that had female leads. And without a doubt, they turned into blockbusters when they launched worldwide. But at the same time, the change and growth of females in the industry is very slow.
Evolution of Bollywood
For example when the industry started females hardly had anything to do with the struggle fight or achievements of the lead actors. Then they gradually started to dance and perform in songs. Further evolution of the industry enhanced their roles. And gradually they started to get a strong position in the script. And finally, they somehow play the major supporting roles in the story.
But at the same time, the Indian industry has not reached a state where both the leads of the movie will equally participate or get the same remuneration for their contributions. If this will ever happen it will be something after 2 to 3 decades or even more.
