The Intriguing Casting Journey of Sam Bahadur, From Ranveer Sigh to a Triumph for Vicky Kaushal in the lead role.
Vicky Kaushal is portraying Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw in the upcoming biopic Sam Bahadur. It has captivated audiences, but little is known about the film’s earlier casting decisions. Ranveer Singh was initially considered the best fit for the role. And Meghna Gulzar showcased her keen interest in casting him for this epic role.
Gulzar had approached Ranveer while working on Deepika Padukone’s ‘Chhapaak.’ However, Singh’s packed schedule with prominent projects like ‘Gully Boy,’ ’83,’ and ‘Takht’ hindered the casting process. Despite waiting patiently for Ranveer’s availability, his time constraints led Gulzar to approach Vicky Kaushal, who promptly accepted the role.
Interestingly, during the period when Meghna was desperately searching for a replacement. Vicky Kaushal was gaining recognition for his superhit ‘Uri: The Surgical Strike.’ He was also set to star in ‘Takht,’ with a potential role in a Dharma Productions historical film. But for some reason that film as well got shelved.
As fate would have it, Ranveer Singh’s unavailability became Vicky Kaushal’s opportunity. And, this opportunity positioned him as he got shortlisted for a lead role in Sam Bahadur. It also includes other stars cast as Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sanya Malhotra, and Neeraj Kabi in pivotal roles. It is scheduled for release on December 1. Additionally, the film is set to clash with the highly anticipated big-budget film named Animal. Ranbir Kapoor plays the main lead in the film with Bobby Deol as the main antagonist.

Meanwhile, Ranveer Singh was last seen in the superhit Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani alongside Alia Bhatt. Now he is gearing up for the Baiju Bawra remake. Vicky Kaushal was last seen in Zara Hatke Zara Bachke and The Great Indian Family. Zara Hatke Zara Bachke was a superhit but The Great Indian Family turned out to be a disaster.

However, the ‘Yodha’ release date shifted to March. Finally, the Merry Christmas team gave a collective statement. And, it stated that they are dedicated to delivering an exceptional cinematic experience. Hence, due to the packed schedule of December 2023, they decided to extend the film’s release to January 2024.
