Film Review: Shukrana โ A Missed Opportunity in Punjabi Cinema
Shukrana had the potential to be a powerful movie with a strong message, but it unfortunately falls short. The story of Shukrana focuses on a widow, played by Neeru Bajwa, who faces pressure from society to marry her late husbandโs younger brother. Itโs a sensitive issue in Punjabi culture, but the film doesn’t quite hit the mark.
Neeru Bajwa shines in the film Shukrana, carrying most of the emotional weight. Her performance as a grieving widow is heartfelt and real. She portrays her characterโs pain and struggles with sincerity, making her the standout star of the movie. The emotional story kicks off after the death of her husband, played by Jass Bajwa, who does an okay job in his role but doesnโt quite leave a lasting impression.
Amrit Maan, who plays Jass Bajwaโs younger brother, doesn’t really fit the part. He looks older than his role and his performance lacks depth, which makes it hard to believe him as a younger sibling. The makeup and effects team also didnโt do much to help with this, which is disappointing.
On the positive side, the supporting cast does a great job in Shukrana. Talented actors like Simran Chahal, B.N. Sharma, Harby Sangha, Rupinder Rupi, Seema Kaushal, and others bring energy and humor to the film. The comedy, which is a regular part of Punjabi movies, is well done and offers some Entertainment.
Interestingly Shukrana deals with feminist themes, focusing on the struggles of a woman in a traditional society. With better direction and more creative storytelling, Shukrana could have made a strong statement. Unfortunately, the story becomes predictable, and even though the film tries to tackle big issues, it feels like something is missing. The addition of a property dispute shifts the focus from the main topic, making the film less impactful.
While Shukrana does address real issues faced by widows in Punjabi families, it doesnโt take any risks. The story moves along without any surprises, and everything feels obvious from the start. This lack of excitement makes the film less engaging and stops it from being the kind of movie that draws people to theaters.
The film clearly had a limited budget, and it manages to make some profit thanks to the fanbase of the actors. However, itโs clear that the filmmakers relied more on this fanbase than on delivering a high-quality, innovative movie. This is a common problem in Punjabi cinema, where many films play it safe instead of trying new things or delivering a truly memorable experience.
In the end, Shukrana is a film that touches on important issues but fails to live up to its potential. Neeru Bajwaโs excellent performance and the contributions of the supporting cast arenโt enough to save the movie from mediocrity. Itโs not the kind of film that will draw big crowds to theaters or push the Punjabi film industry forward.
Shukrana had the chance to be great, but it ends up being just another average movie.
