In a shocking revelation, Kannada and Tamil film actress Ranya Rao has been arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) at Bengaluru International Airport for allegedly smuggling gold by concealing it on her body using tape and specially designed jackets.
According to reports, Ranya Rao made approximately 30 trips to Dubai over the past year, purportedly bringing back several kilograms of gold each time. Sources indicate Ranya Rao received a payment of ₹1 lakh per kilogram, earning an estimated ₹12 to ₹13 lakh per trip. To facilitate this, she allegedly utilized modified jackets and waist belts to conceal the contraband.
Investigations have also uncovered the involvement of a constable named Basavaraj, stationed at Bengaluru Airport, who reportedly assisted Ranya Rao in evading security checks. When officials attempted to search her, Basavaraj intervened, claiming Ranya Rao was the daughter of DGP Ramachandra Rao. Despite this, DRI officials proceeded with the search, uncovering the smuggled gold.
Notably, Ranya Rao had a lavish wedding three months prior at the Taj West End, marrying renowned architect Jitin Hukeri. She also recently acquired a new flat on Lavelle Road, raising questions about her sudden upscale lifestyle. Authorities are now investigating potential connections between this case and a larger smuggling network, possibly involving politicians, businessmen, and police officials.
