Read how Narendra Modi is going to take oath as Prime Minister of India for Third Term on June 8, amid losing majority

In a notable political development, former Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to be sworn in as Prime Minister of India for a third consecutive term on June 8, according to media reports. Despite the BJP falling short of a majority, the party will form the government with the crucial support of its coalition partners. This scenario underscores that it wasn’t the clean sweep the BJP had anticipated.

After the Lok Sabha poll results were announced, the Union cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Modi recommended the dissolution of the 17th Lok Sabha on June 5. The BJP managed to secure 240 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, significantly less than the majority mark of 272. However, with the backing of its allies, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) collectively secured 295 seats, enabling them to form the government.

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the Janata Dal-United (JDU) have played pivotal roles in bolstering the NDA’s numbers. As per sources cited by ANI, both parties have given their formal support to the BJP, thereby facilitating the formation of the NDA government. They are expected to submit official letters of support during an upcoming alliance meeting, highlighting the importance of coalition politics in this election outcome.

The BJP’s tally of 240 seats in 2024 is a significant drop from its previous counts of 303 seats in 2019 and 282 seats in 2014. This outcome reflects a shift in the political landscape, where the party could not secure a clear majority on its own. In contrast, the Congress party showed substantial growth, winning 99 seats—an improvement from 52 seats in 2019 and 44 seats in 2014.

The opposition INDIA bloc also performed better than expected, securing 231 seats and presenting strong competition to the BJP-led NDA. These results, which were closer than the exit polls had predicted, indicate a more competitive political environment and challenge the dominance that the BJP had enjoyed in the previous two terms.

Narendra Modi’s forthcoming term as Prime Minister, backed by coalition support rather than a clear majority, will be a significant aspect of his leadership. The necessity to rely on allies like the TDP and JDU points to the importance of strategic partnerships in the current political climate. This reliance on coalition support highlights that the BJP’s victory was not as decisive as the party had hoped.

As Narendra Modi prepares for his swearing-in as Prime Minister on June 8, the political focus will be on how the new cabinet will be shaped and the policy directions the NDA government will pursue. The support from key allies such as the TDP and JDU will be critical in maintaining a stable government and addressing the aspirations of the electorate.

This upcoming term will present challenges for Modi and the BJP, particularly in navigating coalition dynamics and delivering on their promises. The competitive results of the 2024 elections underscore the evolving political scenario in India and the significant role that coalition politics will continue to play.

The swearing-in ceremony on June 8 marks the continuation of Narendra Modi’s leadership as Prime Minister, albeit with the crucial support of coalition partners. This development reflects the complexities of the recent election results, where the BJP, despite being the largest party, had to rely on allies to form the government. As the NDA embarks on this new term, the political landscape indicates a vibrant and competitive democracy, with coalition politics at the forefront.
