Bollywood is full of stories that make you wonder, “What if?” One such story revolves around Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Karan Joharโ€”two powerhouses in the industry who, for years, almost worked together on some of the most iconic films of our time.

Back in the early 2000s, Karan Johar was gearing up for his next big film, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. He had Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in mind for the role of Anjali, the lively and lovable character who eventually became synonymous with Kajol. Karan Johar, being close to Kajol, initially assumed that she would be too busy with her newly married life to take on the role. Aishwarya, with her beauty and acting chops, seemed like a perfect fit. But, before finalizing anything, Karan decided to narrate the script to Kajol one last time, just out of respect for their friendship.

To his surprise, Kajol immediately said yes, eager to dive back into work. Karan Johar, caught between his loyalty to Kajol and the opportunity to cast Aishwarya, ultimately stuck with Kajol. The role of Anjali, as we know, became iconic in Kajol’s career, but it left fans wondering what Aishwarya might have brought to the character.

This wasnโ€™t the first time Karan Johar had Aishwarya in mind for one of his films. He also considered her for the role of Tina in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, a role that eventually went to Rani Mukerji and became a defining moment in her career. Despite these close calls, Aishwarya and Karan didnโ€™t get the chance to work togetherโ€”until much later.

Years passed, and finally, in 2016, destiny brought Aishwarya and Karan Johar together for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. Aishwarya played Saba, a mature and complex character, adding a new dimension to her already illustrious career. Their collaboration was long overdue, but when it happened, it was magic on screen. It was during the promotion of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil that Karan made these big revelations, sharing how close he had come to casting Aishwarya in some of his earlier films.

Interestingly, Aishwarya once pointed out that Alia Bhatt, one of the brightest stars in Bollywood today, has had the advantage of Karan Joharโ€™s mentorship, leading to many significant opportunities. Itโ€™s a candid observation, reflecting on how relationships in the industry can shape careers.

Yet, despite their history and finally working together in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has never played the main female lead in any of Karan Joharโ€™s directorial projects. Today, fans still hold out hope that Aishwarya and Karan Johar will team up again. Their journey is a reminder that in Bollywood, timing is everything. Even the most brilliant ideas sometimes take years to come to fruition, but when they do, theyโ€™re worth the wait.

In the trailer, this character is shown advocating for Khalistan, a separate Sikh state. For many, this portrayal is not only inaccurate but dangerous. Khalsa argues that it reduces Bhindranwaleโ€™s complex legacy to a simple narrative that paints Sikhs in a negative light.
