Kangana Ranaut Regrets Releasing ‘Emergency’ in Theatres: A Costly Mistake?
Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut is all set to release her much-awaited film Emergency on January 17, 2025. The movie, directed and produced by Kangana herself, focuses on the controversial Emergency period in India under former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. However, Kangana has now admitted that releasing the film in theatres might have been a wrong decision.
Why Kangana Thinks Theatrical Release is Risky
In a recent interview, Kangana revealed that Emergency faced significant delays because of issues with the censor board. It took months for the film to get clearance, which caused her a lot of stress. She said, “I was scared. I felt choosing a theatrical release was not the right decision.”
Kangana believes that if she had released the movie directly on an OTT platform, she could have avoided these delays. Streaming platforms don’t have the same strict rules as theatres, which would have allowed her to showcase the film without compromises.
Financial Concerns
Kangana also talked about how an OTT release might have been financially better. She said, “I thought I could have gotten a better deal on OTT.” According to her, a digital release could have brought more profits, especially because Emergency is a bold and politically sensitive story.
Challenges as a Filmmaker
As both the director and producer, Kangana shared how difficult it was to make a film like Emergency. She underestimated the hurdles of creating a movie on such a controversial subject. Kangana compared her situation to older films like Kissa Kursi Ka, which faced heavy censorship during the Emergency era.
She admitted, “I underestimated the challenges and thought it would be easier to make this film.”
High Stakes for Kangana
Emergency is a crucial film for Kangana’s career. Her last movie, Tejas, was a box office failure, and the pressure is now higher for her upcoming release. The film stars an impressive cast, including Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Mahima Chaudhry, Milind Soman, and the late Satish Kaushik.
Will ‘Emergency’ Succeed?
Kangana’s concerns have left fans wondering if her decision to release Emergency in theatres will pay off. With its politically charged storyline and a strong cast, the film holds potential. But in today’s world, where audiences often prefer streaming platforms, only time will tell if her gamble pays off.
Kangana’s bold choice highlights the challenges filmmakers face in deciding between theatres and OTT platforms, especially for movies with controversial topics.
