Kangana Ranaut slapped with Court Summons in Emergency Film controversy

Kangana Ranaut Summoned by Court Over Film Emergency; Accused of Hurting Sikh Sentiments

Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut has been asked by a district court to appear on December 5, 2024, following a petition filed against her upcoming movie Emergency. The film has sparked controversy, with accusations that it portrays Sikhs in a negative light and distorts history.

Emergency Film postponed amid delay in CBFC certification

Ravinder Singh Bassi, the former president of the District Bar Association, has accused Kangana of damaging the image of Sikhs through her character in the film. He has also asked the court to instruct the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Chandigarh to file an FIR against her. Bassi argues that the film presents a false and harmful picture of the Sikh community without properly understanding its history, leading him to demand legal action against the actress.

Australian Sikh Council demand ban on Emergency Film

This isn’t the first time Emergency has faced opposition. Just five days ago, two residents of Mohali filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, urging the court to stop the movie’s release. They claim the film misrepresents Sikhs and could deeply offend the community. The petition also argues that the film was intentionally made to harm the image of Sikhs, particularly by portraying Sikh martyr Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale in a disrespectful way.

The petitioners have requested that a panel of experts, including members of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), be allowed to review the movie before its release. They want any offensive scenes removed before the film is shown to the public. Many Sikh organizations are also supporting this demand, worried that the film could create unnecessary tension in society.

Kangana herself has added fuel to the fire by making controversial remarks in her press conferences. She recently claimed that “99% of Sikhs consider Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale a terrorist,” a statement that has angered many in the Sikh community. Critics say she is using a strategy similar to the old British “divide and rule” tactic, creating division to generate attention for her movie.

The film’s writer, Ritesh Shah, and other key members of the production team have also been named in the legal case. Petitioners argue that releasing the movie without review could harm social harmony and spark unrest.

As legal battles pile up, it is unclear whether Emergency will release as planned or face further backlash and ban.
