Emergency Film Review: A Historical Disaster Cloaked in Controversy
Kangana Ranautโs much-hyped political biopic Emergency Film falls far from expectations, delivering a poorly executed portrayal of one of Indiaโs most significant historical periods. While the film attempts to showcase the controversial events surrounding the 1975 Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi, it spirals into a chaotic mix of biased storytelling and lackluster filmmaking.
A Misguided Narrative
The story revolves around Kangana’s depiction of Indira Gandhi, aiming to present a gritty insight into her political strategies and personal struggles during the infamous Emergency period. Unfortunately, the Emergency film ends up glorifying the protagonist while completely sidelining the voices of millions who suffered during that time. Instead of focusing on historical accuracy or balanced storytelling, the narrative appears self-indulgent, prioritizing melodrama over substance.
Key historical events, such as forced sterilizations, press censorship, and the mass arrests of political opponents, are brushed over or inaccurately dramatized. The lack of nuance leaves viewers questioning whether this film is genuinely a biopic or merely an attempt at rewriting history to suit a particular narrative.
Flat Performances and Flawed Execution
Kangana Ranaut, who also directs the film, delivers a performance that feels exaggerated and disconnected. While her attempts to mimic Indira Gandhiโs mannerisms are noticeable, they fail to evoke any emotional resonance. The supporting cast, though talented, is given little room to shine, further dampening the overall impact.
The Emergency film’s pacing is another major flaw, with the screenplay dragging in parts and rushing through critical moments. The dialogues, meant to be powerful, often come off as preachy and repetitive, lacking the depth needed for a film of this magnitude.
SGPC’s Ban Demand Adds to the Chaos
Adding fuel to the fire is the opposition from the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), led by President Harjinder Singh Dhami. The SGPC has raised objections to certain scenes in the Emergency film, accusing it of disrespecting Sikh sentiments. They have demanded a ban on Emergency, claiming it distorts history and misrepresents the community’s struggles during the era.
This demand has led to protests in Punjab, further tarnishing the filmโs already controversial reputation. While controversy often generates buzz, in this case, it only highlights the Emergency filmโs failure to handle sensitive topics with care and responsibility.
Final Verdict: The Worst Biopic of the Year
Emergency Film had the potential to be a groundbreaking film, shedding light on a dark chapter of Indian history. Instead, it turns out to be a disappointing watch that neither educates nor entertains. With its one-sided narrative, poor execution, and lack of historical accuracy, this film is far from the masterpiece it claims to be.
Rating: 1/5
