Emergency Film Faces Major Roadblock: Release Postponed Amidst Controversy and CBFC Delays

Much Awaited Emergency Film postponed and can get banned for release amid sensitive issues.

In a surprising twist, Kangana Ranaut’s much-anticipated directorial debut, Emergency, has hit an unexpected snag, forcing a delay in its theatrical release. It was scheduled to premiere on 6th September 2024. Ranaut portrays former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in this politicalhistoric drama.

As per post of trade analyst Taran Adarsh, on X (formerly known as Twitter) “#BreakingNews…#Emergency postponed… Won’t release on 6 Sept 2024. #ZeeStudios #KanganaRanaut.”

Both Kangana Ranaut and Zee Studios are yet to issue an official statement regarding the postponement.

On 30th August, Kangana Ranaut released a candid video on her social media platforms, shedding light on the difficulties the film has encountered in securing its certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

In her video, Kangana addressed the rumours, stating, “Kayi tarah ki afwahein ud rahi hain ki humari film Emergency ko censor certificate mil gaya hai. It is not true. In fact, humari film clear ho gayi thi lekin uski certification rok li gayi hai kyuki bohot zyada dhamkiya aa rhi hain jaan se maar dene ki censor waalo ko” (There have been rumours circulating that my film Emergency has been certified by the Censor Board. This is not true. While our film did receive clearance from the CBFC, the certification was delayed due to numerous death threats against members of the censor board).

This shocking revelation has only added fuel to the fire, with many speculating that the CBFC’s hesitation to certify the film is linked to the immense pressure and threats they have received. The controversy surrounding Emergency escalated following the release of its trailer, which sparked outrage among Sikh organisations and political groups. The Delhi unit of the Shiromani Akali Dal went as far as to issue a legal notice to the CBFC, demanding the film’s release be halted due to its portrayal of Sikhs, which they claim is derogatory and inaccurate.

The backlash against Emergency film is intensifying since the trailer has launched with strong objections. This has created a volatile atmosphere, making the film’s certification process even more challenging.
