Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency Film Gets ‘UA’ Certificate with 10 Changes and 3 Major Cuts by CBFC, Faces Delays Due to Sikh Organizations’ Opposition

Kangana Ranaut’s highly anticipated film Emergency has once again found itself at the center of controversy, as the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) granted it a ‘UA’ certificate but with significant conditions. The film, which was originally slated for release on September 6, 2024, has now been delayed due to mounting opposition from Sikh organizations and legal battles that have affected its certification and release timeline.

Emergency is a political drama that explores the Emergency period in India from 1975 to 1977, a time when civil liberties were suspended and political dissidents were jailed. However, the film’s depiction of certain sensitive issues, particularly the portrayal of Sikh leader Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and the 1984 riots, has drawn strong opposition from Sikh organizations. Several Public Interest Litigations (PILs) were filed, urging the CBFC to reconsider its certification of the film, citing concerns about historical misrepresentation.

These legal challenges led the CBFC to withhold the film’s certificate, causing an indefinite delay in the release. Despite Kangana Ranaut taking legal action and dragging the CBFC to court, demanding the immediate release of the film without any cuts or changes, the CBFC maintained that changes were necessary to ensure that the film does not misrepresent history or cause unrest, particularly among the Sikh community.

The CBFC eventually agreed to grant Emergency a ‘U/A’ certificate but only after asking for 10 changes, including 3 major cuts. These changes are believed to address concerns about the portrayal of Sikhs, particularly in reference to Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and the 1984 riots. The board’s decision appears to be a move aimed at ensuring that the film does not mislead viewers or stir public sentiment in a way that could lead to further controversy.

Despite the CBFC’s intervention, the film’s release is likely to face significant hurdles in Punjab, where Sikh organizations have expressed a firm stance against the film. It is reported that Emergency may never be released in Punjab due to the strong opposition, and its international release is also expected to be affected. Sikh groups abroad are raising their voices against the film, particularly in countries with large Sikh populations, which could impact its global box office performance.

Kangana Ranaut, known for her outspoken nature, has yet to officially announce a new release date for Emergency. The actress-director will also have to restart the film’s promotional campaign, which had already gained momentum ahead of its original release date. With the film’s release now delayed, Kangana will need to focus on reviving public interest in the project and addressing the controversies that have plagued it.

Given the film’s sensitive subject matter and the strong opposition it has received, it remains to be seen whether Emergency will bring the entertainment value that Kangana is known for or if it will continue to stir societal unrest. As the film awaits its release, it has already sparked heated discussions about censorship, historical accuracy, and the balance between artistic freedom and responsible storytelling.

Emergency has already made headlines for all the wrong reasons, and its delayed release could further impact its success at the box office. With the Sikh community voicing strong concerns and legal battles drawing out the certification process, the film’s future remains uncertain. How these controversies play out will likely determine whether the film can win over audiences or become another flashpoint in debates about entertainment and history.
