Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency Film Sparks Outrage: Punjab Theatres Halt Screenings Amid Protests
The much-anticipated release of Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency Film has ignited significant controversy in Punjab, leading to widespread cancellations of its screenings across the state. The film, in which Ranaut portrays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, has been met with strong opposition from various Sikh organizations and farmers’ groups.
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), a prominent Sikh body, has been at the forefront of the protests. In a letter addressed to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami described the Emergency Film as a “calculated attempt to distort history and harm Sikh sentiments.” He warned that its release could provoke significant outrage within the Sikh community.
Despite the absence of an official government ban, numerous cinemas and multiplexes across Punjab have opted not to screen the film. This decision comes in response to demonstrations and appeals from Sikh organizations. Theaters in cities such as Amritsar, Bathinda, Patiala, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, and Hoshiarpur have canceled showings. In Amritsar, members of the SGPC staged protests outside cinemas, leading to the cancellation of scheduled screenings.
Kangana Ranaut has responded to the situation by condemning the actions as “complete harassment of art and the artist.” She expressed her respect for all religions and emphasized her personal connection to the Sikh community, having studied and grown up in Chandigarh. Ranaut labeled the opposition as “propaganda” aimed at tarnishing her image and harming her film.
The controversy surrounding Emergency Film highlights the ongoing tensions between creative expression and community sentiments. As the situation develops, it underscores the challenges filmmakers face in addressing historical events that remain sensitive to various groups.

A Misguided Narrative
The story revolves around Kangana’s depiction of Indira Gandhi, aiming to present a gritty insight into her political strategies and personal struggles during the infamous Emergency period. Unfortunately, the Emergency film ends up glorifying the protagonist while completely sidelining the voices of millions who suffered during that time. Instead of focusing on historical accuracy or balanced storytelling, the narrative appears self-indulgent, prioritizing melodrama over substance.
