Kartik Aaryan Unveils ‘Chandu Champion’ Trailer in Hometown Gwalior
Actor Kartik Aaryan, who has left his fans eagerly anticipating his new look in the upcoming film “Chandu Champion,” finally released the trailer for what he describes as his “toughest” project.
The launch of Chandu Champion took place in his hometown of Gwalior, and it was nothing short of a grand event. Held on a Saturday at the Captain Roop Singh Cricket Stadium, the venue was brimming with fans and admirers who arrived well in advance, undeterred by the scorching heat. Their wait was rewarded with Kartik’s grand entrance, which was met with thunderous cheers, whistles, chants, and even fireworks.
Directed by Kabir Khan, “Chandu Champion” showcases Kartik in a multifaceted role as a boxer, wrestler, and soldier. The film is a biopic of Murlikant Petkar, India’s first Paralympic gold medalist. The trailer of Chandu Champion highlights not just the journey of Chandu but also reflects Kartik’s own transformation for the role. The storyline follows Chandu, a man who dreams of becoming a champion and hones his skills to represent India in the Olympics by joining the Army, thus beginning his arduous journey.
The trailer of Chandu Champion opens with a powerful scene of Chandu waking up from a two-year coma in 1967 after being injured in war. This sets the stage for an emotional narrative that takes the audience through Chandu’s life. A poignant moment shows a young Chandu telling his schoolteacher about his dream of becoming a wrestler, only to be mocked by his classmates who sarcastically call him “Chandu Champion.”
This name, initially a source of ridicule, becomes a testament to his resilience as he strives to shed the stigma and embrace his identity.
The trailer of Chandu Champion is replete with emotional highs, underscored by larger-than-life visuals that promise a cinematic treat. Kartik’s physical transformation for the role is evident, and Kabir Khan has praised the actor’s dedication to embodying an international-level multi-disciplinary sportsperson.
Kartik, who initially had 39% body fat, underwent a rigorous fitness regime to bring it down to an impressive 7%, a feat achieved without the use of steroids—a testament to his commitment and discipline.
Reflecting the film’s theme of an indomitable spirit, Kartik launched the trailer just days after a personal tragedy struck. His relatives, Manoj and Anita Chansoria, were among the 16 victims of a tragic hoarding collapse in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar area. Despite this, Kartik attended their funeral and soon after joined Kabir Khan and producer Sajid Nadiadwala for the trailer launch event.
At the event, Kartik spoke about the mixed emotions he felt returning to his hometown for such a significant moment. “This is a dream come true moment for me. This is where I had dreamt to be an actor, and to bring the toughest film of my career here is incredibly special,” he said.
Acknowledging his recent loss, he added, “Mentally, how am I feeling? Kaafi kuch chal raha hai meri life mein (there’s a lot going on in my life), but the show must go on. I’m just fortunate that all of you could join us for the trailer launch of the film here.” His words were met with heartfelt cheers from the crowd, underscoring the strong connection he shares with his fans.
“Chandu Champion” is Kabir Khan’s follow-up to his 2021 hit, “83,” which depicted the Indian cricket team’s historic win at the 1983 World Cup. Announcing “Chandu Champion,” Kabir emphasized that this film, based on a true story, traces the life of Murlikant Petkar, who won a gold medal at the 1972 Summer Paralympics in Germany. Petkar’s journey from a soldier injured in war to a Paralympic champion is a story of unparalleled grit and perseverance.
Kabir Khan has been vocal about the challenges and the inspiring journey that Kartik Aaryan undertook for the film.
He shared a poignant post on social media, “The story of ‘Chandu Champion’ is incredibly inspiring, but the journey that Kartik went through to become this champion is no less inspiring. I met him when he had put on weight for a role. He had 39 per cent body fat.”
He further said, “I told him that he had to portray an international level multi-disciplinary sportsperson. He just smiled and said, ‘I will do it, Sir.’ A year and a half later, with no use of steroids—something he was adamant about—we took this photo on set. Body fat 7 per cent!! I’m proud of you.”
Jointly produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and Kabir Khan, “Chandu Champion” is slated for a theatrical release on June 14. The collaboration between Nadiadwala’s production expertise and Khan’s directorial vision promises a film that is both emotionally engaging and visually stunning.
The early buzz surrounding the film suggests it will be a significant hit, resonating deeply with audiences through its powerful narrative and inspirational message. As the release date approaches, anticipation continues to build, with “Chandu Champion” poised to not only honor Murlikant Petkar’s legacy but also to inspire countless individuals with its tale of perseverance and the relentless pursuit of dreams. With Kartik Aaryan at the forefront, the film is expected to leave a lasting impact and solidify his position as one of Bollywood’s most dedicated and versatile actors.
