Review: Call Me Bae – Ananya Panday Shines in Her OTT Debut, But the Story Falls Flat
Call Me Bae, which premiered on Amazon Prime on September 6th, marks Ananya Panday’s first major role on an OTT platform. In the series, she plays Bae, a spoiled Page 3 socialite who loses her luxurious lifestyle due to personal mistakes. The show follows her as she navigates middle-class struggles and ultimately becomes a successful journalist. While the story has an interesting premise, it has its highs and lows.
Ananya Panday’s portrayal of Bae in Call Me Bae is one of the best things about the series. She plays the role of a pampered, rich girl with ease, possibly because she has grown up in a similar spotlight. However, what really stands out is how she shows Bae’s emotional vulnerability as her life changes. From being a glamorous socialite to learning how to live a simpler life, Ananya portrays Bae’s growth beautifully and keeps the audience hooked.

While Bae’s character and journey are compelling, the overall storyline of Call Me Bae struggles. The show gives us a glimpse into the lives of the ultra-rich, revealing that even they have basic problems, but their issues come with a hefty price tag. This side of the story is interesting, offering viewers a look behind the curtain of luxury.
However, the Call Me Bae series feels stretched out. With 8 episodes, the plot often drags, with some moments feeling repetitive. Bae’s struggles with adapting to middle-class life are explored, but the story could have moved forward faster. The lack of a strong climax is another weak point. After watching Bae grow throughout the series, her success as a journalist feels rushed, and the ending doesn’t deliver the emotional impact it could have.
Call Me Bae is an enjoyable watch, especially thanks to Ananya Panday’s strong performance and her character’s evolving fashion sense and personal growth. The way the Call Me Bae series handles Bae’s love life is a refreshing and positive take, showing that women can make mistakes and still come out stronger, without letting those mistakes define them. However, the stretched-out plot and lack of a satisfying climax prevent the series from reaching its full potential.
For those looking for light entertainment with great fashion and a peek into the lives of the rich and famous, Call Me Bae is a good pick. But if you’re seeking a more compelling and tightly written story, it may leave you wanting more.
