Arvind Sinha, the chairperson of the Indian Panorama non-feature film jury, openly criticized the festival organizers, accusing them of transforming the event into a Bollywood spectacle, referring to it as a “tamasha” and “nautanki.”
Sinha expressed discontent specifically towards the presence and prominence given to Bollywood figures like Karan Johar at the IFFI opening ceremony, questioning their relevance to cinema and stating they shouldn’t even be granted entry, let alone be seated in the front rows. He emphasized the need for a clear demarcation between Bollywood and the festival’s cinematic focus, urging decision-makers to take appropriate actions.
Renowned for his work in documentary filmmaking, Sinha voiced these opinions at the IFFI awards platform during a media interaction on the festival’s second day. He highlighted that personalities like Karan Johar do not require such platforms for film promotion, implying that the organizers should refrain from expending public funds on providing them with prominent seating positions.
Supporting Sinha’s standpoint, T. S. Nagabharana, the chairperson of the Indian Panorama feature film section jury, echoed similar sentiments, aligning with his colleague’s viewpoint regarding the integration of Bollywood dominance within the festival.
The remarks from both esteemed jury heads underscore a growing debate regarding the perceived influence of Bollywood within a platform primarily dedicated to celebrating a diverse range of cinematic excellence, hinting at a potential need for a more distinct separation between Bollywood and the broader cinema landscape at such festivals.
