Amrita Singh’s Old Interview on Post-Divorce Struggles and Star-Wife Insecurities Resurfaces
Amrita Singh, a veteran actress and once a prominent name in Bollywood, has candidly opened up about her life following her 13-year marriage to Saif Ali Khan, which ended in 2004. An old interview with Zoom has resurfaced, shedding light on the personal challenges Amrita Singh faced after her divorce.
Reflecting on her post-marriage life, Amrita Singh admitted to letting herself go, becoming lazy, and gaining a significant amount of weight. “I became lazy and complacent after marriage,” she confessed. “Someone told me that women have this great urge to nest, and I started looking like a fat ostrich in a nest. I was just happy and living in my la-la land.”
Amrita Singh elaborated on how the insecurities of being a star-wife affected her mental well-being. Despite being a star in her own right before marrying Saif, she struggled with the pressures that came with her husband’s fame. “This must be true for a conventional star wife, but I was a star before I became a star wife. So, I didn’t have the insecurity to keep up with the Joneses in any way. You get complacent and lazy, you can make it sound romantic and say that it was love and trust, but the bottom line is that you get lazy, and since you have done it all, you don’t get excited. For instance, I don’t get excited when I have to sit in a beauty parlor for 5 hours. I did it because it was my job.”
When asked if she felt pressure to look good being the wife of a star constantly surrounded by beautiful women, Amrita Singh said, “I am the kind of person who has to feel it herself. Nobody can make me do anything.” She admitted that while Saif didn’t put any pressure on her, he did suggest she join the gym and look good for him, if not for herself.
Amrita Singh shared her perspective on the different types of insecurities she faced as an actor versus a star-wife. “The insecurity of being an actor is healthier because it pushes you to be creative, but being a star wife, the insecurities are unhealthy. They can damage your mind. If you are an insecure person, you aren’t going to be happy being a star wife.” She added that although it wasn’t a large portion of her time, the insecurities were significant enough to impact her mental health. “Not a large time, but time enough to damage my mind.”
The relationship between Amrita Singh and Saif Ali Khan had always been under the spotlight, not least because of the substantial age gap between them. Their marriage surprised many, given Amrita Singh was twelve years older than Khan. Their eventual divorce was equally dramatic and received extensive media coverage due to the blames and accusations flying from both sides. Despite the nastiness of their separation, both have moved on and found happiness in their own ways.
Saif Ali Khan is now happily married to Kareena Kapoor, a union that has also been a favorite with the media, often labeled as a modern-day Bollywood fairy tale. Meanwhile, Amrita Singh chose to focus on raising her children, Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan, on her own. Despite the turbulent times post-divorce, both Amrita and Saif have managed to find their respective peace and continue to support their children, ensuring they remain a priority.
Amrita Singh’s resilience is evident as she continues to work in the film industry, with her latest appearance in 2022’s “Heropanti 2,” alongside Tiger Shroff, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, and Tara Sutaria. This candid revelation from Amrita Singh not only highlights the personal toll of being in the public eye but also underscores the unique pressures faced by those married to celebrities. Now separated and happy in their own spaces, Singh and Khan’s journey is a testament to moving forward and finding contentment despite past adversities.
