Reasons Behind Electoral Success of Amritpal Singh and Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa in Punjab
Khadoor Sahib and Faridkot, Punjab– In the latest electoral results, Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh and Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa, the elder son of Beant Singh—one of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s assassins—are leading by significant margins. Amritpal Singh, currently in jail in Dibrugarh under the National Security Act (NSA), is ahead by over 120,000 votes in Khadoor Sahib, while Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa leads by more than 5,800 votes in Faridkot as of 1:20 pm.
While their strong performance especially for Amritpal Singh and Sarabjeet Singh without any political party support suggest a resurgence of hardline politics, the underlying causes are far more complex, rooted in the long-standing issues plaguing Punjab.
Punjab has been grappling with unresolved issues such as the division of river waters per the SYL accord, seeking justice for the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh pogrom, and the release of Sikh political prisoners who have served over 30 years in jail. These ongoing problems have created widespread discontent, often leading to agitations and the emergence of self-proclaimed leaders who rally the public for justice.
The extensive manhunt for Amritpal Singh in March and April 2023, which resulted in the detention of over 300 youngsters—many of whom had merely interacted with him—has left a lingering sense of injustice. Although many were eventually released, the villages still harbor simmering anger. The week-long internet shutdown during the manhunt, perceived as draconian, evoked memories of the troubled 1980s. “It reminded us of the dark days of Punjab, the 1980s,” remarked a businessman from Ferozepur.
Well-known economist Dr. Lakhwinder Singh highlighted the economic decline in Punjab, which has been ongoing since the Green Revolution of the 1960s ran its course nearly three decades ago. With high unemployment rates and a stagnating agricultural sector, the populace is desperate for change and willing to explore new political avenues. In recent assembly polls, the electorate voted for “badlav” (change). Dr. Lakhwinder emphasized that the rise of Amritpal Singh and Sarabjeet Khalsa should be viewed through the lens of development issues rather than separatist tendencies.
Amritpal Singh initially gained prominence for his anti-drug crusade before advocating for a separate state. In these elections, voters are more focused on his anti-drug stance rather than his separatist rhetoric. Amritpal Singh’s family and campaigners strategically avoided mentioning Khalistan during the campaign. The ongoing drug crisis in Punjab, which no political party has successfully tackled, has driven voters to seek alternatives, resulting in votes against traditional parties as much as for these two candidates.
Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa, who has unsuccessfully run for elections three times, garnered voter sympathy by highlighting his lost youth due to his father’s execution for assassinating Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Many voters feel indebted to his family for their perceived sacrifices for the Sikh Panth, particularly in avenging Operation Bluestar, which led to the destruction of the Akal Takht. The Akali Dal and SGPC’s focus on the 40th anniversary of Operation Bluestar has further benefited Sarabjeet.
In conclusion, the electoral success of Amritpal Singh and Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa reflects a complex interplay of unresolved issues, economic distress, and a desire for change among Punjab’s voters, rather than a straightforward return to hardline politics.
