In the recent Bollywood News, a concerning trend has emerged on social media. It involves the use of Deepfake technology to manipulate images of well-known female celebrities. The victims list includes Rashmika Mandanna and Katrina Kaif. Details follow.
A few days ago, a peculiar video surfaced featuring the Varisu actress in a striking black outfit. Rashmika Mandanna was taken aback by this and took to her social media to address the issue. She expressed, ” I feel really hurt to share this and have to talk about the deepfake video of me being spread online. Something like this is honestly, extremely scary not only for me. But also for each one of us who today is vulnerable to so much harm because of how technology is being misused.”
She further added, “Today, as a woman and as an actor, I am thankful for my family, friends and well-wishers. Who is my protection and support system. But if this happened to me when I was in school or college. I genuinely can’t imagine how could I ever tackle this. We need to address this as a community and with urgency before more of us are affected by such identity theft.”
Following Rashmika’s statement, many actors and actresses rallied in support. They recognize the potential harm this trend could cause. Consequently, legal action has been taken against the individual responsible for editing and sharing the video with Rashmika’s likeness.
Original person in the video
Finally, the person featured in the original video, Zara Patel, came forward. She stated on her social media, acknowledging that her video had been used without her consent. She stated, ” Hi all, it has come to my attention that someone created a deepfake video using my body and a popular Bollywood actress’s face. I had no involvement with the deepfake video. And I’m deeply disturbed and upset by what is happening. I worry about the future of women and girls who now have to fear even more about putting themselves on social media. Please take a step back and fact-check what you see on the internet. Not everything on the internet is real.”
Towel scene deepfake
Adding to the list of victims is Katrina Kaif, known for her role as Zoya in Tiger 3. Due to the extensive publicity surrounding the film. A scene featuring a towel fight involving Katrina Kaif has circulated widely on the internet. Regrettably, someone altered the scene by replacing Katrina’s towel with a two-piece ensemble, consisting of a top and a bikini. In the original scene, she is entirely covered by a towel. This misuse of AI, particularly against women in India, has sparked strong reactions from internet users.
Law and order
While celebrities have the platform to contest manipulated images. It is crucial to consider the potential impact on ordinary women in society. Therefore, the government must take decisive action against those who exploit AI for illicit purposes.
Laws have already been enacted to address such crimes. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has guided to social media platforms. They emphasise the legal provisions governing deepfake videos and the potential penalties for their creation and dissemination.
The government has cited Section 66D of the Information Technology Act, 2000, which pertains to ‘punishment for cheating by personation using computer resources.’ It states, “Anyone who, by means of any communication device or computer resource, cheats by personation, shall be subject to imprisonment for a term of up to three years and may also be fined up to one lakh rupees.”
However, it is our strong belief that culprits must face significant penalties to raise awareness in society and deter such acts from occurring in the future.
