The story of this crime thriller
“Khufiya” commences with the enigmatic demise of Heena, a woman who had purchased a poisoned perfume intended for a rival of the nation. In fact, Heena, who was also romantically involved with KM (portrayed by Tabu), tragically passes away while endeavouring to prove her innocence.
KM, the clandestine leader of an agency operating in secrecy for India as a RAW agent, is deeply affected by the loss of her beloved. This event sparks suspicions within the system, hinting at a potential breach of classified information. KM’s superior assembles a team, ultimately selecting Ravi, a recruit leading a lifestyle incongruent with his earnings.
The first half of the narrative centres on establishing connections to trace Ravi’s leaks. The team plans to apprehend him in the act the following morning. However, Ravi gets wind of the ongoing investigation against him during the night. He eliminates the undercover agents stationed near his residence. In a tragic turn of events, his mother is compelled to fatally wound his wife, who had refused to accompany them, deeming them disloyal to their nation.
In the latter half, Ravi’s wife, Charu, joins the team in Ravi’s absence, as he has absconded to the USA and needs to be brought back. Ultimately, KM and Charu manage to persuade Ravi to rejoin their ranks, employing a form of coercion, to collaborate in the mission to eliminate Mirza.
Budget of Khufiya
The bulk of the filming occurred in India, particularly at locations such as Ravi’s family home and the prominent spots he and his wife frequented. Also, with the exception of Tabu, who plays the lead role, most of the cast members were cost-effective. Additionally, a portion of the film was shot in a Western country to align with the storyline. The inclusion of a few English-speaking recruits added a bit more financial strain to the budget. In total, “Khufiya” was produced on a modest budget ranging between 8 to 10 crores.
Reviews
“Khufiya” captivates its audience right from the beginning, effectively building suspense and thrill. The strategically placed flashbacks in the storyline create essential connections. The initial half of the narrative successfully piques the viewer’s interest, compelling them to stay engaged. However, the second half falls short of delivering the true justice that the plot demands.
Tabu and Wamika Gabbi demonstrate unwavering dedication and seamless execution in bringing their characters to life. Ali Fazal delivered a commendable performance, yet there was potential for an even more impactful portrayal, especially in the climax, had he been given the opportunity. The ending leaves some loose ends, possibly intentionally, to set the stage for a potential Part 2. Further clarification and resolution may be anticipated in the sequel.
In its entirety, it is an espionage thriller that is definitely worth watching.
We give this entertainer a 3.5 rating and recommend our viewers to watch it.
