Sikandar Ka Muqaddar: A Netflix-Worthy Thriller Bolstered by Jimmy Shergillโs Stellar Act
Neeraj Pandey, the filmmaker behind gripping thrillers like Special 26 (2013) and Baby (2015), ventures into familiar territory with Sikandar Ka Muqaddar. Starring Avinash Tiwary, Tamannaah Bhatia, and Jimmy Shergill, the film begins with promise, weaving a tale of suspense, betrayal, and redemption. However, while it holds potential for an engaging OTT watch, it falls short of delivering the cinematic thrill expected on the big screen.
The story of Sikandar Ka Muqaddar revolves around a diamond heist at a high-profile exhibition. Sikandar (Avinash Tiwary), his wife Kamini (Tamannaah Bhatia), and Mangesh Desai (Rajeev Mehta) find themselves as prime suspects under the watchful eye of Jaswinder Singh (Jimmy Shergill). Despite no concrete evidence against him, Sikandarโs life spirals into chaosโhe loses his job, his reputation, and even his peace of mind. Seeking solace, he marries Kamini, a single mother, only for life to deal him another blow when Kamini falls seriously ill. Fifteen years later, a call from Jaswinder reopens the case, leading to a climax that ties up the loose ends.
While the film Sikandar Ka Muqaddar starts with Pandeyโs signature knack for intrigue, the narrative falters midway. The shift from a taut heist thriller to a slow-moving personal drama feels jarring. As the focus shifts to Sikandarโs struggles, the film loses the pacing that initially gripped audiences. The addition of a romantic song further disrupts the flow, making the film feel unnecessarily stretched.
Despite its flaws, Sikandar Ka Muqaddar is elevated by its performances, particularly Jimmy Shergillโs. As the determined cop Jaswinder Singh, Shergill commands attention with his understated yet powerful portrayal. His nuanced performance brings depth to the character, making him the standout in an otherwise uneven narrative. Avinash Tiwary delivers a convincing performance as the troubled protagonist, while Tamannaah Bhatia adds warmth to the story, albeit in a role that could have been better fleshed out.
Ultimately, Sikandar Ka Muqaddar feels more suited for Netflix than theaters. Its character-driven narrative and emotional undertones resonate better on a smaller screen, where viewers can appreciate the storyโs intricacies without the pressure of theatrical expectations. While it lacks the punch needed for a memorable big-screen experience, it remains a decent watch for fans of Pandeyโs storytelling style.
