Citadel: Honey Bunny – A Stretched Spy Thriller, Made Watchable by Varun Dhawan and Samantha Ruth Prabhu
Citadel : Honey Bunny is a spy series set in the 1990s, starring Varun Dhawan and Samantha Ruth Prabhu. While it has some exciting moments and great performances, the story feels stretched and has too many gaps, making it hard to fully enjoy. Here’s a simple breakdown of what works and what doesn’t in this show.
Plot Summary
The story begins in 1992. Rahi, or “Bunny” (Varun Dhawan), is a stuntman in Bombay’s film industry. His best friend, Hanimandakini, or “Honey” (Samantha Ruth Prabhu), wants to become an actress but is struggling. Bunny reveals to her that he’s actually a secret agent and invites her to join his team for a mission. Honey agrees, and they complete the mission successfully.
Fast-forward Citadel to the year 2000. Honey is now living a peaceful life in Nainital with her young daughter Nadia and running a café. But her spy past isn’t fully behind her—Bunny and their enemies track her down, pulling her back into a dangerous game.
What Works – Strong Acting and Cool Action Scenes
The strongest parts of Citadel : Honey Bunny are the performances and the action sequences. Varun Dhawan shines in both emotional and action scenes, showing his versatility as an actor. Samantha Ruth Prabhu is a real highlight; she brings a lot of energy to the role and often stands out more than the storyline itself. Her performance has hints of Katrina Kaif’s fierce spirit from the Tiger series, making her scenes feel fresh and exciting.
A big highlight of Citadel is Honey’s young daughter, Nadia. Her escape scenes are fun to watch as she shows surprising maturity and quick thinking, using little hints from her mom to outsmart her enemies. These moments add charm to the show and are among its best scenes.
Where It Falls Short – Too Long and Full of Plot Holes
Sadly, Citadel: Honey Bunny feels too dragged out. The story could easily fit into three episodes, but the creators stretched it to six. By the fourth episode, the show starts to feel slow, with too many scenes added just to fill time.
Another downside is the way Baba, the leader of the spy team (played by Kay Kay Menon), is portrayed in Citadel. Baba’s character is very simple and lacks the gray areas or mystery that could make him more interesting. It’s also strange how he runs a whole spy network with no ties to the police or other agencies, which doesn’t make sense and weakens the story.
Great Technical Work but Missed Opportunities

On the technical side, Citadel: Honey Bunny does a good job. The background music by Aman Pant is catchy, and the cinematography captures the 90s vibe and the beautiful locations of Nainital. The action scenes are well done, even though they aren’t very unique. However, the editing could have been tighter to cut down on the length and keep the story more engaging.
Overall Rating: ★★✩✩✩
