The story of this real-life inspiration narrative
The tale unfolds in a government-run school in Chambal, where students are sitting for their 12th-grade exams. However, a stringent no-cheating policy enforced by the DSP leads to the entire class failing. Disheartened, Manoj abandons the idea of further education and starts a tempo service to ferry people to and from the nearby town. But their operation is soon noticed, leading to their imprisonment due to a vengeful bus owner. Remembering the honest DSP, Manoj rushes to his aid, and the DSP intervenes, helping them. This act of integrity leaves a lasting impression on Manoj, inspiring him to return to his studies and face the 12th-grade exam with renewed determination.
Upon completing his 12th grade, Manoj pursued a degree in Hindi and History. Encouraged by his grandmother, who sacrifices her lifetime savings, he moves to Gwalior to clear the PCS exam. However, during the journey, his belongings are stolen, adding to his challenges. To his dismay, the government discontinued the PCS exam that year in the state. Though disheartened, Manoj encounters another student heading to Delhi to prepare for the UPSC exam. Recognizing an opportunity, Manoj joins his newfound friend in the capital. Juggling a full-time job at a library and overnight study sessions, Manoj perseveres to clear the prelims.
Further
During this transformative period, Manoj crosses paths with the love of his life. Despite facing repeated setbacks in his initial attempts at the main exam, he channels his focus and determination, ultimately overcoming his weaknesses in the fourth try.
When it comes to the interview stage, Manoj faces a tough panel. One interviewer was particularly harsh, leading him to believe he may not succeed. However, Manoj remains resolute in his mission to bring positive change to the country, a conviction that ultimately impresses the interviewers.
Finally, Manoj Kumar Sharma assumes his role as an IPS officer, joining the ranks of the nation’s civil servants. The story concludes with the officer marrying his beloved, marking a fitting culmination to his inspiring journey.
Budget of 12th Fail
“12th Fail” is a compelling narrative that follows the journey of a young man emerging from an underprivileged, uneducated, and economically disadvantaged background, facing stark limitations in accessing life’s essentials. His path to success was marked by formidable challenges, with experiences ranging from working on roads to laboring in a library, factory, and even a humble tea stall. Given this backdrop, the portrayal of such an environment was justifiable from a financial perspective.
Moreover, the filmmakers ingeniously utilized government premises to enhance the storytelling, guided by the story’s moral compass, and it is our belief that they were not levied charges for such usage.
In order to infuse authenticity into the narrative, a number of UPSC aspirants were cast, adding an ethnic richness to the story. With a budget of 10 crores, Vidhu Vinod Chopra skillfully crafted this potent and motivational tale, a testament to his adept storytelling.
The journey depicted in “12th Fail” serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, illustrating how one can transcend adversity to achieve greatness, regardless of humble beginnings.

We believe “12th Fail” earns a solid 4-star rating from us, as it manages to strike a balance between entertainment value and a meaningful moral narrative, all while operating on a constrained budget.
